Dart's Special High Performance (SHP) program was developed to offer quality engine components for hot rodders and budget minded racers. Richard Maskin saw the need for a high quality small block which would be a superior, yet affordable, option to junkyard cores or "cookie cutter" factory crate motors. Together with Dick Arons, they incorporated the most desirable features of each iteration of the small block Chevy into one design. Dart's extensive background in top-level racing was then called upon to include performance enhancing features you won't find in any factory casting.

To complement the new block, rotating assemblies were selected to provide short blocks and kits which take the guesswork out of engine building. We chose the cranks, rods, pistons, rings and bearings to produce powerful and reliable engines. We purchase these components in quantities in order to be able to offer them at affordable prices. Dart has also created top end kits which include assembled iron or aluminum cylinder heads, intake manifolds, valve covers, gaskets, fasteners and even spark plugs to complement the SHP engine packages.

Richard Maskin came up with the idea for the SHP block as a way to support the aftermarket manufacturers, and help local engine builders to be competitive with factory crate motors. The local engine builders and speed shops were vital in creating the performance aftermarket through hard work and innovation. Dart is committed to supporting this industry so that the tradition of performance enhancing engine development remains strong in America.
